Ahmet Ustunel - May 4, 2012

NTC / May 4 - 31, 2012
First Friday Reception, May 4
Ahmet Ustunel
Featuring a collection of ceramic transformational masks signifying unity between humans and animals

Ahmet Ustunel uses both a pottery wheel and hand building techniques to create in ceramics. He never thought that blindness was an obstacle to getting involved with art or in creating something. On the contrary, he believes it helps him to be more creative. Totally blind since the age of three, texture to Ahmet is what color means to a sighted artist. He feels each piece when it comes out of the kiln checking the glaze for bubbles, texture and other chemical reactions that make the piece complete.

Testimonies

"In some ways, it seems to be human nature to try and fit people into molds. The programs at SMSC allow people to break out of molds. It allows a freedom to be who you are. We all need that."

- Mark Fisher, Program Manager
