Inspire/Respond
Sophie's Gallery Artists pair with Members of the Feminist Image Group
What happens when artists from FIG create visual and critical responses to artworks by adult artists with developmentally disabilities from Sophie's Gallery? Inspire/Respond was a challenge to expand artistic horizons and
methods, to make works that honor the traditions of outsider art. Artworks will be displayed together in this exciting exhibition.
Formed in 2009, the Feminist Image Group (FIG) is a coalition of visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another's careers. FIG's member artists work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance. As artists, FIG is concerned with how women continue to be portrayed in the art world. As teachers and feminists, they encourage students and colleagues to be alert to sexism in its many forms. FIG promotes an inclusive worldview that allows all voices. Previous exhibitions include "Women by Women" at the San Diego Art Department, 2010, and "What Women Want" at the Lyceum Theater Gallery, 2011.
